PT BOAT SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP BLOG

Hello ...

This blog is for the IPMS/USA's PT Boat SIG and also for feedback on www.ptboatworld.com.

It is meant for civil exchange of information relating to PT boats and related craft.  There will be no pissing matches or personal attacks allowed. Any such posts will be removed immediately.

  1. My 2010 book on PT boats and my book on MAS boats, both from Nimble Books are available from Nimble Books, www.amazon.com and www.bn.com and are available both in printed versions and as an eBook version.

The PT book is a paper back and the MAS book is a hard cover book ... The Italian Navy has put it in five of their museums in Italy.

  3. I'll have big news later on this summer regarding something concerning how to build, detail and convert the Italeri 1:35 scale PT-596 kit.

    Stayed tuned.

  5. Hey Garth I am almost ready to finish the PT314 refit to a party boat. I have not seen anyone comment except you so not sure if anyone is looking at the IPMS site or not. Thanks for the encouragement!

  7. You mean www.ipmsusa.org? I've been noticing no one ever posts anything in SHIPS or the PT SIG thread for days on end or ever except for the latest ones between Art and I.

  8. GARTH , are you ready for this ? The TULAGI TERROR had a U.S. ARMY field gun on the bow and a stolen ? 40 mm single mount on the engine room deck overhead area . .Don,t ask me how ? I don,t know . She also had ,Let,s see , This writing is water damaged and over forty years old .I believe it says four " K " guns two on each side with the service racks (stolen too?) and modified to fit her .She only had two of the four torpedo tubes so I guess anything,s possible .OH , there is one other thing SHE was MINUS the original damaged center engine and associated running gear .It was Replaced with a " LIBERTY " aircraft engine and some other stuff .All the windows were covered over and the wheel/house? had the windows installed from a very damaged HIGGINS that was operating with her and three other " MISFITS " tankerbuilder-gjgeracci846@satx.rr.com

  10. Charlie ...

    Good points.

When he says, "engine room cover", he COULD mean where the 40mm was located aft; so we could give him 'slack' on that point ...

BUT ... I agree in that a PT's hull and deck could not withstand the force of a K-Gun - much less 4 of them - presumably two to a side ...

And, that Liberty engine reference has me stimied as well ... weren't they aircraft engines? From before the war?

I've seen photos of SC-431 in December of 1941 fitted with a Liberty aircraft engine fitted to her aft deck as an experiment ...

He does say he does have a water-stained document that says all of this; but Charlie, even though people like Al, Frank and David think I know squat? In all of my reading and research ... I have NEVER heard of, read about or saw a photo of a PT with K-Guns ... Although, I have seen a PT with a big-ass searchlight where a 40mm would be ...

And, until three years ago, I thought only the 4 boats of RON 29 had the ELCO THUNDERBOLT fitted to them ... but then, Wayne Traxel gave me a photo of the 174 in 1945 fitted with it .............

Subject: Re: [PT BOAT SIG BLOG] New comment on PT BOAT SPECIAL INTEREST GROUP BLOG.

This came up in the forum almost 2 years ago June 2010 (Al Ross said he saw it on a modeler site). A few comments but in general, it was a "yeah, right" where's documentations and/or photograph.

For one, I don't think the deck is strong enough for the recoil of a K-gun It's like a 5" gun charge. You couldn't put a 40mm on the engine room cover. And where are they going to get a liberty engine???

And what kind of document is this....

  11. Hello . Why is it , every time I post something someone challenges my veracity .Is it that you all think everyone has secure files that go back forty or fifty years including photos ? I need to learn to post pics , yes , are you going to come to this disabled person,s house in TEXAS and show me how ? Nuff said .I gave info on this boat based on memory and one very water stained piece of paper that was over thirty when I got it .No pictures .The gentleman that told me about her was supposedly her engineer .He NEVER mentioned the boats number or her duty area .He would get glassy eyed when he talked about her and the crew .I was a kid and he left three very grainy pictures and a statement describing what he remembered .I cannot go back and wake him up to find out the details ! The model was toast as models go .There was remnants of the U.S. ARMY field gun and what LOOKED like a K gun ? I really not sure .I built the boat after the first was destroyed in 1982 . I could be wrong , but , as a neophyte in computers it seems you give no credence to ORAL HISTORIES even if they are second hand .I won,t mention her again .That,s like saying the FIRST U.S.S. IWO JIMA built after the war didn,t roll heavilly to one side and stay there when she was launched .I HAD photos of that but , alas they are gone too . Life is NOT fair and I feel that requiring all this background is unecessary .After all what are we doing , Writing an HISTORICALLY accurate book ? OR talking about models .I,ll not visit here soon again . P.S. There,s a LIBERTY engine in a field on some kind of machine about forty miles south of here , YES it runs .

    1. Now, ... do you see why I don't try to act and treat people like Al Ross, David Waples and Frank Andruss? People don't cotton to it, they don't like it and - as you can see it from his response, he was offended by it.

All he knows (like me with the old vet over the 68 - when he told me flat out that the boat with that crazy camou scheme he offered no proof but said that is not the 68 but my boat - the 66. I'm going to tell a vet he was wrong because Al Ross has deemed it was the 68? Yeah, right.)

This man knew a man who had told him that he knew of and worked on a PT boat that was configured as such - and there was one photo which was lost somehow ... and everyone jumps down his throat and says it cannot be.
